Cleaning your sewing machine should be a regular part of your sewing routine, with frequency depending on how often you use your sewing machine and what types of fabrics you sew.


If you are sewing daily and/or using fabrics that shed, you should plan to clean and oil your sewing machine weekly. However if you are more of a weekend sewer, a monthly oil and cleaning should be sufficient.

The three best indicators that it's time to clean your sewing machine is when you:

  • Start to hear squeaking
  • Experience clinging
  • See buildup
