How to Make a Crazy Patch Block (and Make It Look Amazing!)
If you’re looking for a playful, expressive quilt block that turns scraps into art, the Crazy Patch Block is a must-try! In our latest video, we break this fun technique down so you can jump in with confidence—even if you’ve never made one before.
Here’s how you can make this lively, improv-style block step by step, plus tips to finish it beautifully and add meaningful details to your next quilt project.
What Is a Crazy Patch Block?
A Crazy Patch Block is a free-form, scrappy square built from unexpected pairings of fabric. It’s perfect for using up scraps and layering fabrics without strict pattern rules. The result? A dynamic, expressive block with tons of personality.
This style gives you freedom to play with color, texture, and unexpected contrast—making every block unique.
Step-by-Step: Make a Crazy Patch Block
1. Start with a Foundation Square
Choose a base fabric piece — this is your foundation or starting block (usually a neutral fabric). This gives structure to your crazy patch.
2. Choose Your First Scrap
Select your first scrap and place it on the foundation square where you want it. This is your center point for building the rest of your block.
3. Flip & Sew Method
Lay your next scrap right sides together overlapping an existing edge or corner of the block. Then:
Sew along the raw edge with a ¼″ seam allowance.
Flip the new piece outward so the right side shows and press it flat. This “flip and sew” action builds your crazy patch outward piece by piece.
4. Continue Adding Scraps
Repeat the flip → sew → press process with additional scraps:
Work around the block edges.
Build out all sides gradually so the fabric covers more area.
Let each new piece define where the next one goes (no rigid plan).
This is the heart of the crazy patch technique — improv + play + layering.
5. Trim Your Block Into Shape
Once enough pieces are added and your square is covered:
Trim the excess fabric off the edges so your block becomes a clean, even square.
Use a ruler + rotary cutter to square up all four sides to your desired block size.
6. Decorate (Optional but Recommended!)
After you’ve pieced and trimmed:
Add embellishment such as decorative machine stitches or embroidery over the seams.
This adds character and hides seam intersections while enhancing your design.
