Improv Curved Piecing: A Step-by-Step Guide

Improv curved piecing is a fun and creative quilting technique where you sew curved fabric pieces together without worrying about patterns or exact measurements. Instead of following strict rules, you cut your curves freehand and piece them together as you go, letting the design unfold naturally. It’s all about going with the flow, embracing the wonky shapes, and enjoying the process of creating something totally unique and unexpected!

Improv Curved Piecing

HOW TO:

Cut 2 1/2” - 3“ strips from various fabrics.
Place strip 1 and strip 2, on top of one another, overlapping by an approximate inch or so. Strip 2 will lay underneath. Make sure that both strips have RIGHT SIDES FACING UP.
With rotary cutter, slice through both layers, with a gentle curve going up and down. I have found it to be helpful to begin with a straight cut for about a 1/2”before beginning the curve. (This helps as you begin to sew the pieces together.) Separate pieces and toss aside the 2 small pieces that will not be used.
Use a marking pencil (optional) to mark in 3 different places the tops and bottoms of curves. I enjoy aligning these marks as I’m sewing my curves. It is not absolutely necessary, but you may find it helpful.
Place 2 strips right sides together. THIS WILL LOOK A BIT STRANGE...DO NOT PANIC! :) Simply line up the raw edge at the top of each strip, and begin to sew. There is no need to pin. Hooray!
Shorten your stitch length to app. 1.8mm. Using a 1/4” seam allowance, continue sewing along the curve, keeping the bottom strip edge aligned with the 1/4" mark, and holding the top strip UP with your hand as you sew. The only important part of this piecing alignment is exactly when and where the needle is. If it gets out of control, take a deep breath, keep the needle down, and reposition. All is well! :)
When you reach towards the end of the strip, using a pair of tweezers to help hold the fabric in place can be very beneficial.
Press seam out and you’re ready to add on the next strip, using the same method as outlined prior.
Continue in this same manner, adding strips, & cutting those gentle curves. This process can open up a lot of different possibilities for creative fun!
