How to Sew a Shell Tuck Edge (Step-by-Step)
A shell tuck edge — also called a scallop tuck or shell hem — creates a delicate, decorative curved edge along a hemline or fabric border. It’s a beautiful detail that adds vintage charm to garments, baby blankets, and linens.
This technique uses a special stitch on your sewing machine that alternates sewing on and off the raw fabric edge to form tiny, curved “shells.”
What You’ll Need
-
A sewing machine with a shell tuck stitch
-
Lightweight or medium-weight fabric
-
Matching or contrasting thread
Before you begin, refer to your machine’s manual to locate the shell tuck or scallop stitch setting — not all machines call it the same name.
Step 1 — Select the Shell Tuck Stitch
On your machine:
-
Choose the shell tuck or scallop edge stitch.
-
Set the stitch width wider for more pronounced curves.
-
Adjust the stitch length to a moderate setting so the shell shapes are smooth.
-
Increase thread tension slightly if needed — this helps the stitch pull the edge into its curved shape.
Step 2 — Position Your Fabric
Place your fabric under the presser foot so that:
-
The needle is just off the folded edge and over the raw edge slightly.
-
As you sew, the machine will take small bites of the fabric and pull back, forming the shell shapes.
Lower the needle manually to check positioning before stitching.
Step 3 — Sew the Shell Tuck Edge
Start sewing slowly:
-
Guide the fabric evenly.
-
Don’t pull or push — let the machine’s feed dogs and stitch do the shaping.
-
As you sew, you’ll see the fabric edge curl into scallops with small curved “shells.”
The secret is having the needle drop just off the folded edge so the stitch grabs the raw edge at regular intervals — that’s what pulls the curve in.
Step 4 — Finish and Press
Once you’ve stitched the entire edge:
-
Give it a gentle press from the right side with a warm iron.
-
Use steam if appropriate for your fabric to help define the scallops.
