If you’ve always thought zippers must be sewn on a regular sewing machine, this tutorial will make you rethink everything (in a good way). In our Serging With the Girlfriends video, Cheri shows how you can install a zipper on your serger—quickly, neatly, and with a beautifully finished edge in one pass.

Why use a serger for a zipper?

A serger can stitch and finish the seam at the same time, which is especially handy for projects like:

  • zipper pouches

  • pillow covers

  • bags and organizers

  • any project where you want a clean inside finish without extra steps

It’s fast, tidy, and once you do it once, you’ll want to do it again.

The basic idea

Instead of using a zipper foot and sewing close to the zipper teeth like a traditional install, this method focuses on serging the zipper tape to the fabric edge so the seam is secured and finished at the same time.

You’ll still want to test first (always), but the concept is simple: align, serge, and let the machine do the work.

Step-by-step: installing the zipper on your serger

1) Prep your zipper and fabric

Place the zipper tape along the edge you want to attach it to, keeping everything aligned and flat. Many people find clips helpful here (pins + serger blade = not best friends).

2) Start on an overhang

Begin stitching just before the fabric/zipper tape begins so your stitching is stable before you reach the project edge.

3) Serge the first side

Guide the zipper tape and fabric evenly along the serger’s guide so the stitching stays consistent. Keep your hands light—no pulling.

4) Manage the zipper pull as you sew

If you approach the zipper pull and it’s in your way, stop with the needle down (if your machine allows), lift the presser foot, move the pull out of the way, and keep going. (This one little move makes everything feel smoother.)

5) Attach the second side

Fold or reposition your fabric so the other side of the zipper tape lines up with the remaining fabric edge, then repeat the process.

Tips for clean results

  • Test on scraps first. Zippers vary in thickness, and a quick test helps you confirm stitch width and trimming before you commit.

  • Watch your alignment more than your needle. On a serger, consistent guiding is what creates a professional-looking seam.

  • Don’t fight the curve or pull the tape. Let the feed dogs do their job and steer gently.

Troubleshooting (quick fixes)

My zipper tape is getting trimmed too much.
Move your fabric/zipper alignment slightly so the blade trims less, or adjust your cutting width if your machine allows.

The seam looks wavy.
Slow down and avoid pulling. If you’re working with stretchy fabric, check your differential feed.

The zipper area feels bulky.
Go slower as you approach the zipper pull and keep the layers as flat as possible under the presser foot.
