While unthreading your sewing machine seems intuitive enough, there is a correct way to unthread your sewing machine to ensure you don't damage the tension disc on your sewing machine.

Here is your (very) quick Girlfriend's Guide to unthreading your sewing machine.

The key to successfully unthreading your sewing machine is simple: Always pull your thread down through the tension discs. The same direction you threaded it, the same direction you will unthread it.

Pulling your thread through the same direction guarantees it moves through the natural pathways (think of it as going with the grain rather than against it). Doing this will reduce unnecessary wear on your tension disc, and extend the life of your sewing machine.

It's as simple as that! To learn more sewing basics for beginners, read here about Placing Your Bobbin.
