The strip method is an efficient way to sew a two-color nine-patch block, saving time and ensuring accuracy. This technique is perfect for beginners and experienced quilters alike. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create this timeless block using the strip method.
Materials Needed:
- Fabric: Choose two contrasting colors
- Cutting Tools: Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler.
- Sewing Supplies: Sewing machine, thread, pins, and iron.
Step 1: Cutting the Strips
-
Determine Strip Width: Start by deciding on the finished size of your block. For example, if you want a 6-inch finished block, divide that by 3 (since the block has three rows):
- 6 inches ÷ 3 = 2 inches for each square.
- Add ½ inch for seam allowances: 2 inches + ½ inch = 2½ inches.
- Cut strips 2½ inches wide from both the light and dark fabrics.
-
Cut Strip Lengths: The strip length depends on how many blocks you want to make. For a single block, a strip length of at least 8 inches is sufficient.
Step 2: Sewing the Strips
- Sew the First Set: Sew one dark strip to one light strip, and then add another dark strip to the opposite side of the light strip, creating a dark-light-dark combination.
- Sew the Second Set: Sew one light strip to one dark strip, and then add another light strip to the opposite side of the dark strip, creating a light-dark-light combination.
- Press the Seams: Press the seams toward the darker fabric to prevent the lighter fabric from showing through.
Step 3: Cutting the Segments
- Subcut the Strips: Using a rotary cutter, subcut both strip sets into 2½-inch segments. These segments will form the rows of your nine-patch block.
Step 4: Assembling the Block
-
Lay Out the Rows: Arrange the segments in a checkerboard pattern:
- Row 1: Dark-Light-Dark
- Row 2: Light-Dark-Light
- Row 3: Dark-Light-Dark
- Sew the Rows Together: Pin and sew the segments row by row using a ¼-inch seam allowance.
- Join the Rows: Match the seams carefully to ensure clean intersections, and sew the rows together to complete the block.
By using the strip method, you can quickly and accurately create beautiful two-color nine-patch blocks, perfect for a variety of quilting projects. This technique streamlines the process, allowing you to focus on the fun of designing and piecing your quilt. Happy quilting!
